“On the Job”
Synopsis of the Story
n this story Faith goes to her job on the first day. She is escorted by her work-training teacher. This well-trusted teacher introduces Faith to her new boss. They shake hands, acknowledging that they agree to be in a Yellow Handshake Circle relationship. Faith acknowledges that they are skipping over the Orange Wave Circle because she has been introduced to her boss by a trustworthy teacher.
Making Your Point
Faith agrees to skip the Orange Wave Circle relationship with Mr. Lopez because of the special circumstance of being formally introduced by a trustworthy adult. Faith and Mr. Lopez know that they will not progress any closer than a handshake because they are NOT friends, but are employer/employee. This is not to say that they do not like each other, but friendship is a much different kind of relationship and includes more than just liking another person.
It is permissible for Faith to cross the circle boundaries and quickly establish new boundaries consistent with the Yellow Handshake Circle for touch, talk, and trust with Mr. Lopez. They can skip the Orange Wave Circle relationship boundaries because of the special situation of being formally introduced.
Key Objectives:
- To show an example of a mutual change in a relationship, from the Red Stranger Circle to the Yellow Handshake Circle when there is a formal introduction by a trustworthy adult.
- To illustrate that both people understand they will cross an entire circle of boundary limits in touch, talk, and trust because of their mutual necessity and the benefit to Each person had previously known and independently established a history of appropriate levels of touch, talk, and trust with the third party.
- To show that sometimes an entire circle can be crossed and permanently changed with mutual This happens when there is a special circumstance, like in this case, a formal introduction by a trusted third party.
Sequential Process:
Step 1 :
Teacher will begin by reviewing the past session: replaying the video from the previous meeting, stressing the most important points, and eliciting answers and comment from participants.
Step 2:
Inform participants that today they will learn about how relationships can change when a formal introduction causes a relationship to skip over a circle boundary level.
Step 3:
Show Part 2, Disc 3, “On the Job” pausing when the story is concluded.
Step 4:
Elicit the following information from the participants, replaying the video if desired or needed:
- Faith’s work teacher introduces her to her boss, Lopez on her first day at work.
- Before today, Lopez had been a stranger to Faith in the Red Stranger Circle.
- Faith already knew the work-training teacher and had a well-established Yellow Handshake Circle Relationship with
- Lopez also already knew the work teacher and had a well-established Yellow Handshake Circle Relationship with her.
- The work-training teacher knew both Faith and Lopez and had a Yellow Handshake Circle Relationship with each of them.
- The work-training teacher introduced Faith and Lopez to each other.
- The work-training teacher helped Faith and Lopez skip the Orange Wave Circle and safely establish a more beneficial Yellow Handshake Circle Relationship quickly.
- Faith and Mr. Lopez shook hands as a way of communicating their mutual agreement to the boundaries of Touch talk and trust that is consistent with the Yellow Handshake
Step 5:
Help participants to review or define these vocabulary words and generate a discussion about how the words are used in the story that they have just seen:

Step 6:
Invite participants to select icons to place on the wall graph and discuss the degree of trust that is necessary in a third party to safely permit skipping a circle and moving quickly to the following circle.
Step 7:
Invite participants to use three separate circle diagrams, pictorial icons and arrow icons to show the starting circle relationships and ending circle relationships of Faith, the work training teacher and Mr. Lopez. Give each of the story characters a chance to be the center of all their circles on the large graph as a way to give the different point of view.
Step 8:
Instruct participants to open their CIRCLES Journal to the story titled “On The Job.” Allow time for participants to complete their journaling story for this lesson.
Step 10:
Hand out the reproducible worksheet at the end of this lesson for participants to complete in class or for homework.

Write your own story about a job interview that you had when you were introduced to your boss by a trusted person you both knew. Include the following information in your story:
- Name and color of the CIRCLE where the boss started
- Name and color of the CIRCLE where the boss ended
- Name the boss and the trusted person who introduced you
- Write the kind of relationship you have with the boss now
- Write about how the relationship changed over time
