The Test of Interpersonal Competence for Employment contains two sections, one entitled. "Interactions with the Supervisor," and the second. "Interactions with Co-Workers." Each section will take approximately 30 minutes to administer. If both sections are given on the same day, the examinees should be given at least a one-hour break between sections. It is preferable, however, to give one section in the morning, and the other in the afternoon.
The test administration instructions contained in this section are written for the examiner who plans to give both sections of the test to his/her students. Instructions are provided for giving the "Interactions with the Supervisors" test first, and the "Interactions with Co-Workers" test second. TICE was standardized in this manner. In the event an examiner desires to deviate from this format, modification in the administration procedures given on these pages will be necessary.
The examiner should be able to administer the test to approximately 10 examinees at a time without assistance. If more than 10 examinees are tested together, a proctor may need to assist the examiner. The test should be administered in a room free of distractions and interruptions. The materials needed to administer the TICE are: a test manual for the examiner, answer sheets and a supply of #2 lead pencils with erasers for the examinees. To aid the orderly process of test administration, the examiner should organize these materials prior to testing.
During testing, the examiner should ensure that examinees have the correct answer sheet, are on the correct item at all times, and are working independently. Examinees should be encouraged to respond to all test items, even if they need to guess, but the examiner should not coach, explain words, use irregular voice inflections or assist the examinees in any manner that might invalidate the test results. Throughout the test, the use of second-person pronouns (he/she, his/her, him/her) has been systematically varied to control any bias attributable to sex.
To make sure that all examinees have an equal opportunity to answer test items correctly, it is important for the examiner to follow the administration instructions exactly as written. All instructions to the examiner are in boldface type, and should not be read aloud.
Pass out the answer sheets for the "Interactions with Supervisors" test and have the examinees write their names on them. Begin the test with the sample items, which are provided for practice so that the examiner can verify that the examinees understand the test format.
Say; I am going to give you a test about getting along with other people at work. I will read some common problems that occur with people at work, and you should choose the best answer to each problem.
If proctors are present, introduce them to the examinees.
Say: On the front of your answer sheet you will find a practice test like the one you will be taking. We will do this practice test to show you how to take this kind of test. I will read a problem and three answers twice. You should circle the letter which goes with the best answer. If you think the answer 'a' is best, circle 'a.' If you think answer 'b' is best, circle 'b,’ If you think answer 'c' is best, circle 'c.' There is only one best answer for each problem. Be sure to listen carefully as 1 read the problem so that you will remember which answer goes with each letter. Remember that the best answer may be 'a,* 'b,' or 'c.’ Are there any questions?
Pause and answer any questions. Then go to the Interactions with the Supervisor test on the next page.
