Step 1: Lesson Introduction

Last time, we found out why being even-tempered helps make you attractive to other people. We learned that if you dump or misplace anger, you won't be attractive to them.

There are other ways to be socially unattractive. One of these ways is by being poorly groomed.

  • Ask students what grooming means. Explain that it refers to how neat and clean we are in the way we dress and other aspects of our appearance.
  • Ask students to discuss instances when they were with another person who was poorly groomed. How did that make them feel about the person? Did it make the person more attractive to them?
  • Tell students that in today's video, we're going to see why it's important to be well-groomed if you want to be socially attractive.

鈻讹笍 Show the video.

鈴革笍 Stop the video when the "Pause for Discussion" title appears on the screen.

Step 2: Guided Discussion, Part 1

What did Johnny do that was NotSmart?

He is poorly groomed.

  • Hair uncombed
  • Dirty face and teeth
  • Unshaven
  • Squinting eves (needs glasses)
  • Filthy shirt and jacket
  • Jacket doesn't fit
  • Clothes don't match (undershirt with a sport jacket and jeans)
  • Clothes too casual for the occasion
  • Fly unzipped
  • Bad breath
  • Body odor

Not only is he poorly groomed; his manners are crude (coughing and sneezing without covering his mouth, wiping his nose on the pillow, groping and trying to kiss Leah, etc.).

What happened because Johnny was NotSmart?

He makes himself completely unattractive to Leah.

  • She's totally grossed out by his appearance and crude behavior.
  • He makes everyone stare when in public; she's embarrassed to be seen with him.
  • She's turned off by his bad breath and body odor.
  • Her date with him has been a complete disaster. No way will she ever go out with such a disgusting slob again.

How could Johnny have been PeopleSmart?

Have students discuss how Johnny could have been PeopleSmart in the same situation. Then tell students to watch the next part of the video to see one way Johnny could have been PeopleSmart.

鈻讹笍 Start the video again.

鈴革笍 Stop the video when the "Pause for Discussion" title appears on the screen.

Step 3: Guided Discussion, Part 2

How was Johnny PeopleSmart this time?

He's well-groomed.

  • Tasteful jacket, pants, shirt and tie; clothes appropriate for the occasion
  • Entire outfit goes together
  • Clothes neat and clean
  • Clothes fit perfectly
  • No squinting (wearing nice glasses now)
  • Hair combed
  • Face clean and shaved
  • Clean teeth
  • Good personal hygiene (no bad breath or body odor)

Not only is Johnny well-groomed; his manners are impeccable. He even brings Leah a big gift!

What happened because Johnny was PeopleSmart?

He makes himself attractive to Leah.

  • Before, she tried to squirm away when he kissed and groped her. Now she can't keep her hands off him; she holds his hand, strokes his arm, and hugs him.
  • She can't wait to go out with the "new Johnny"!

What can we learn from this?

  • Being well-groomed does more than just make you look good to others; it makes you feel good about yourself. You feel more confident in all social situations. This confidence comes through in your behavior. By looking great and acting confident, you become very socially attractive.
  • Not all of us are born with movie star good looks. There are certain parts of your appearance you can't control. But you can control how well-groomed you are. Control what you can control, and you'll make the best possible impression on others.
  • Good grooming shows that you respect yourself and that you respect the other person. This respect you show is yet another thing that makes you socially attractive.
  • Good grooming begins with good personal hygiene. Shower, use a deodorant, brush your teeth, and follow other good habits of personal hygiene. This will make sure that you smell as good as you look.
  • Finally, don't forget about good manners. These also show respect and make you socially attractive.

Step 4: Activities

Have students create wall charts listing essential elements of a) good grooming, and b) good personal hygiene.

Based on these charts, have students:

  • Create checklists summarizing the dos and don'ts of good grooming and personal hygiene.
  • Take these home and post them in their room.

Have students brainstorm different situations in which they might be with other people, and work together to decide what attire would be appropriate in each case. These situations might include:

  • Going to a movie
  • Going to a dance club
  • Going to a prom
  • Going out to a nice restaurant with him/her and his/her parents
  • Going hiking
  • Working together at home on a school project.

Have students:

  • Come to class dressed for the above situations
  • Take turns receiving feedback from the class on what is NotSmart or PeopleSmart about their grooming and attire.

Have students identify ways in which their wardrobe is lacking for different social occasions. If possible, arrange a class shopping expedition in which students can assist each other in purchasing needed items.

Have students:

  • Keep a journal of what they wear and how well-groomed they are on different social occasions.
  • Report their experiences to the class. Have the class assist them in learning from their experiences and developing strategies for becoming better groomed.

Have students form small groups and create and perform rap songs entitled "Looking Good. Award prizes for each song's performance.

Have students discuss TV or movie scenes where a character was either:

  • unattractive by being poorly groomed, or
  • attractive by being well-groomed. Have students roleplay these situations.

Have students cut out pictures of people who are poorly groomed or well-groomed and create separate collages of these pictures.

Have students identify the negative consequences of being poorly groomed and the personal benefits of being well-groomed in social situations. Then have them create separate wall charts listing these consequences.
