Lesson 1: Teacher Introduction/Content Focus

Series Content Overview

“Cheating" continues to introduce your students to the basic tenet of Cognitive Theory: that our feelings and behavior are directly related to what we think and believe. It will also teach them to recognize the destructive nature of negative (irrational) self-talk and how to use The BeCool (Rational) Self-Talk Process to stay in control and to avoid Losing It!

Lesson Content Overview

So far, losing it has been associated with losing control and acting out aggressively. In

"Cheating," your students will see another way to lose it: to withdraw from the problem or acquiesce to its demands; giving in or giving up instead of assertively trying to solve the problem.

"Cheating" focuses on coping with disrespect that is self-generated and disrespectful to ourselves. The concepts of "respect" and "disrespect" are usually associated with the quality of respect we show or get from others. Of equal if not more importance, however, is the quality of respect we show ourselves. This video program addresses this often neglected dimension of disrespect.

In addition to teaching and reviewing The BeCool (Rational) Self-Talk Process, the following elements should be stressed:

  1. You can lose it not only by losing control and blowing up but also by losing control and giving in or giving up.
  2. Self-respect is as important or more important than the respect we get from others.
  3. Making decisions that we respect or "feel right about" promotes self-respect and feels good in the long run.
  4. We have a responsibility to defend ourselves against negative self-talk that attacks our self-respect.
