- Head down, no eye contact
- Body bent over.
- Sad facial expression
- Timid body movements
COLD Thoughts or Self-Talk:
- "This always happens to me."
- "There's nothing I can do about it."
- "I speak up, they'll be more angry."
COLD Behavior:
- Do or say nothing
- Mutter or speak with a low voice volume.
- Cry.
- Leave or avoid the angry person.
HOT Appearance:
- Head up, glaring stare, 100 much eye contact.
- Terse posture, clenched fists, light muscles.
- Angry facial expressions
HOT Thoughts or Self-Talk:
- "If I'm calm, they won't listen to me."
- "If I don't fight back, they'll be more angry."
- "Others will think I'm a baby if I donβt fight back."
- "Go ahead, I'll get you back.β
HOT Behavior:
- Arguing and not listening
- Speaking loudly.
- Angry voice.
- Making threats.
- Hitting throwing or breaking things.
COOL Appearance:
- Take time to stop and relax. Pause, turn,look or step away, take deep breaths and do other relaxing" behaviors (stretching, etc.)
- Confident facial expression.
- Good eye contact when speaking and listening.
- Speak with calm, "important voice."
COOL Thoughts or Self-Talk
- "I'm going to stay calm and listen."
- "I'm a good person even if they're angry at me."
- "Is this anger fair?β
- Decide if it's dangerous anger
COOL Behavior: If anger is fair:
- Calm down Lock Cool, Think Cool
- Accept/Apologize/Make Up
- Take A Break if the person is too angry to listen.
If anger is unfair:
- Explain Your Side
- Take A Break/Leave the Person Alone if person needs time to calm down
If anger is dangerous:
- Leave and/or Get Help
