1. Student Roleplay Activity
Assign "bully" and "bullee" roles and ask the students to roleplay the following vignettes, using the COLD, HOT, and COOL responses. The roleplays should allow for the various COOL responses (Le. "Look the Look"... ignoring and walking past the bully, "Talking the Talk"... standing up for yourself by using the 4-Step Plan, or leaving.) Use a pair of BeCool sunglasses and the "3-Note Whistle" on audio cassette for the COOL response.
Give students many opportunities to practice BeCool responses so they become familiar with and confident in using them. Encourage the student to include various choices in COOL responses for each vignette.
- You are standing in line waiting to come into the classroom from recess. A bully gives you a push from behind. Students model the COLD, HOT, and COOL responses. (Recommend doing the vignette twice, one time with a little push, modeling "ignoring" and one time with a big push, showing "talk the talk.")
- You are walking to the office and a bully begins to call you names. "Hey, you little baby!" "Where are you going?" "Are you going to see the Principal?" "You're in trouble." Students model the COLD, HOT, and COOL responses.
- You are jumping rope and a bully comes and takes the rope. Students model the COLD, HOT, and COOL responses.
- You are entering the bathroom and a big bully inside threatens you. (Recommend practicing the "leave and get help" response only!)
2. Chester says, "Think Through the Choices"
This game is played like "Simon Says." The teacher acts as "Chester" (leader), until students understand the game. The game can be played indoors or outdoors. Students stand facing "Chester" (leader). "Chester" gives directions to act COLD, HOT, or COOL.
- Chester says, "act COLD." Students imitate the "COLD Chester" by looking helpless and pretending to cry.
- Chester says, "Act HOT." Students imitate the "HOT Chester" by growling and showing claws.
- Chester says, "Act COOL" Students imitate the "COOL Chester" by standing tall, with a confident look, and putting on sunglasses.
Mix up directions and remember, if the direction is not proceeded by "Chester says," students stand still. Also, use the sunglasses provided or use the template in the Appendix and have students make their own pair.
3. 4-Step "Chant" Game
Students are taught the "Chant" first. The teacher may want to print the "Chant" on a large poster board to read as the students are learning it.
The 4-Step "Chant"
I don't like what you say.
It makes me feel, a bad way.
I want you to stop,
Or we can't play.
Once the students have learned the "Chant," proceed with the game. The teacher gives various "peer pressure/bullying situations," and the students respond with the "Chant." Examples of some "peer pressure/ bullying situations" are as follows:
- Your friend pressures you into lying to him/her.
- Your friend pressures you into playing a joke on another classmate.
- Your friend pressures you into taking something that belongs to someone.
(The "Chant" game is an activity that also can be played with cognitively challenged students.)
