Session 6: Community Awareness and Personal Safety

Goals

The goals of the "Community Awareness and Personal Safety" session are for the participants to learn:

  1. Being a good neighbor
  2. Personal safety and precautions to take when going out

Strategies

Similar to the previous module, the following steps will be used in teaching "Community

  • Awareness and Personal Safety" skills:
  • Instructional content explaining the essential skills and elements involved
  • Viewing video vignettes of common problematic situations
  • Discussing with participants alternative appropriate responses
  • Modeling appropriate responses (facilitators)
  • Providing the opportunity for participants to rehearse and roleplay
  • Discussing and providing clear informative feedback concerning roleplay
  • Providing the opportunity for participants to rehearse and roleplay following feedback

Ask if any of the participants had an opportunity to share common areas or objects or had a situation involving respecting privacy since the last session and thus practice what was discussed at our last meeting. If yes, have participants describe the situation and how they incorporated what was discussed Get input from others about possible improvements. constructive comments, and positive feedback If no situation is brought up, encourage participants to think about the content of the meetings during the week and to bring up situations that have occurred which involve the skills discussed to date.

Being a Good Neighbor

  • How well do you know your neighbors?
  • What makes a neighbor good or bad?
    • Respecting property. [eg, keeping yard/house maintained (overgrown bushes), keeping trash cans tidy]
    • Respecting privacy (eg, when are appropriate times to visit/ stop and talk? don't through windows]
    • Not being disruptive (eg, loud music, loud parties/friends, keeping pets in the yard]

Safety When Carrying Money

  • How much money should you carry? (no more than $20.00)
  • Where should you carry money? (eg, wallet, purse)
  • How should you carry your purse/wallet? (wear your purse strap across your shoulder / carry your wallet in your breast or front pocket)

Precautions to Take When Going Out at Night

  • When possible, avoid going out alone at night
  • Be aware of your surroundings (look around, be aware of people nearby, be cautious in area are not well-lit)
  • when possible, use streets with lots of lights and lots of people to get to your destination
  • walk on the side of the street with lights
  • consider telling others where you are going and when you expect to return

Danger Discrimination

Harmless Encounters

  • a stranger asks you for directions
  • a stranger makes small talk while you are waiting for the bus
  • a panhandler asks you for some money

When to Become Concerned

  • a stranger sits or stands too close to you (you feel uncomfortable)
  • a stranger follows you / insists on talking to you or asking for money
  • inappropriate conversation (eg, sexual content, personal questions, insults, yells at you)
  • inappropriate touching
  • a stranger invites you to go with him
  • a stranger offers you money or gifts

How to Deal with Uncomfortable Situations

  • you do not have to answer a stranger's questions, especially if you feel they are personal
  • ignore, keep walking, walk/move away
  • tell the person to leave you alone
  • move towards other people and/or a lit area
  • go into a store or business
  • ask someone for help (eg, bus driver, store clerk, police) or call for help (eg, call 9-1-1)
  • draw attention to yourself. Yell at the person to leave you alone.

🌟 Modeling

A facilitator should model the appropriate behavior for the following -

  1. stranger stops you on the street and starts asking you personal questions
    • politely inform the person that you do not know him and that the information requested is none of his/her business and walk away.
  2. A panhandler insists on asking for
    • say "NO" firmly and walk quickly away
  3. a stranger is sitting too close on a bus bench and touches
    • say "NO" and move farther away (stand up, if needed)

Roleplay Vignettes

  1. A stranger (facilitator) on the street asks for money.
    1. Politely refuse and walk away.
  2. Preparing to go out.
    1. Getting money ready.
    2. Place money in a purse/wallet or other safe areas.
  3. Someone(facilitator) is bothering you on the street (you've already asked him to leave you alone).
    1. Going into a convenience store and telling the clerk about the person
    2. Ask the clerk to call the police.

Individualize roleplay vignettes whenever possible by substituting objects or situations with those brought up by participants in previous discussions.

🗯️ Discussion/Feedback

The facilitator is to observe closely the participants' actions and reactions during the roleplay and provide feedback on their participation. The facilitator should not hesitate to stop the participants if they are rehearsing incorrectly or are in need of guidance. The roleplay situations must be as pleasant and rewarding as possible. Social praise and compliments should be frequently used
