Equipment needed:
- Playground ball
- Chalk dust
Instructions:
- Ask for three student volunteers. Ask the first student to wipe his/her fingers in Chalkboard dust.
- Hand the “dusted” student the ball. Ask him/her to touch the ball and then pass it to the next person. The “germs” of dust will be on the ball and will pass from the first person to the second person.
- Repeat the process with the second person passing the ball to a third person.
- Point out that, to begin with, none of the students had been exposed to the germs. After they had touched something that the infected person (“person “A” with the chalk dust) touched, they were infected, too.
- Be sure to emphasize that touch is only one way air-borne germs travel (i.e., air Borne transmission includes touch, hand to mouth, sneezing, coughing, etc.).
