Objectives

Students will:

  • Recognize the normal process of labor and birth.

Teacher Notes

Talk to students again about the special "birthing" classes a man and woman (or a lesbian and her female partner) can take to prepare for this big responsibility. What will they want to learn? Where are such classes taught in your area? If possible, ask a couple to discuss their experience with the class. Discuss how important it is to have support during and after pregnancy. Who can single women get this support from? (Parents, friends)

Teaching Questions

This baby is being born after many hours of labor. Labor is a time when the woman has cramps that signal it is time to begin the birth. This can take many hours and be very uncomfortable. Where is this woman? (A hospital delivery room) Who is with her? (A man who is her partner in the pregnancy and birth, medical helpers) The woman has to work hard to help the baby come out. Where was the baby? (Uterus) Where is it passing through? (Vagina) After it's born what will happen? How will this man and woman feel? How will they take responsible care of this baby?

LifeFacts Assessment

Point and Ask: What is happening here? Where is the baby coming from? What will happen next? How does the woman feel?
