Objectives

Students will:

  • Recognize how a condom is used.
  • Understand the importance of correct usage.

Teaching Notes

Let students open condom packages and handle them. Condoms can seem funny and you should expect laughter. Only latex condoms should be demonstrated since natural skin condoms do not prevent the spread of HIV, the virus which, if left untreated, causes AIDS. Demonstrate unrolling a condom. Put a drop of or water-based lubricant in the tip of the condom before unrolling. Unroll on two fingers, a teaching model, or a banana. Leave room at the end. Refer to Lesson 10 for details. You may also want to use Teaching Picture 16A to illustrate ejaculation of sperm into the vagina when a condom is not used.

Teaching Questions

This man is going to use a condom correctly to help prevent pregnancy and STIs. Why is he concerned about using a condom? Do you think it would be hard to ask someone to use a condom? Why? How might you bring it up? How is a condom used correctly?

LifeFacts Assessment

Point and Ask: What is this man doing? Why?
