Accompanies Lesson 8

Objectives
Students will:
- Understand what sexual intercourse means.
Teacher Notes
Explain sexual intercourse as the insertion of man's hard/erect penis into another person's vagina or anus. Because the rectum tears easily, you may want to talk about precautions to be taken to make anal intercourse safer (lubrication, condoms). Emphasize issues of responsibility, privacy, trust, and consent.
Teaching Questions
Men and women can have sexual intercourse in several ways. Sometimes the man is on top when he puts his penis in the woman's vagina. Sometimes the woman is on top. They can also be side by side or back to stomach. The man moves his penis in and out of the vagina (or the woman moves her vagina up and down on the man's penis). This gives them both pleasure. Both men and women can have an orgasm during sexual intercourse. Are they in a private place? How are they being responsible? (Privacy, consent, use of condoms and birth control). Gay men and lesbians employ a variety of positions in their sexual relationships too. Provide supplemental materials as necessary and appropriate to the needs of your students; oral and anal sex can be addressed here. The amount of information you supply should be tailored to the students you teach.
LifeFacts Assessment
Point and Ask: What are these people doing? What is it called? Do you know other ways of saying that? Where are these people? (In private)
Consider This
Gay and lesbian students probably won't recognize themselves, nor will they identify with, the situation above. Discuss with students the fact that not everyone is heterosexual and that gays and lesbians make up a small percentage of the population. You may need to provide additional illustrated materials as needed to promote inclusivity in your classroom.
