Objectives

Students will:

  • Describe some of the feelings a victim of sexual assault might experience.
  • Identify resources for finding help with feelings following sexual abuse.

Teacher Notes

Students will probably be able to identify with some of the common responses to sexual assault-feelings of fear, powerlessness, and anger. Help them understand that such feelings are normal when trust and privacy have been violated. People who feel this way may need help coping with these strong emotions. Though they have a right to feel angry, they also have a right to feel strong and confident again. This lesson helps to identify resources available in most communities for victims of assault and exploitation.

Teaching Questions

Another form of counseling is called a support group. This woman goes to a support group. All the other people in her support group were sexually assaulted, too. They share feelings, listen, and support each other. They all went through a similar experience, so they understand one another. They help each other feel strong and proud again.

LifeFacts Assessment

Ask: Support groups are another way people can feel strong and confident again. What is a support group? How does it help people feel better after sexual assault?
