Objectives

Students will:

  • Identify behaviors and precautions that will help to make dating safe and enjoyable.
  • Understand that trust takes time to develop.

Teacher Notes

Safety in social situations addresses situations with friends and dates. Many of the rules for safe dating and socializing rely on the understanding that trust develops over time. LifeFacts: SmartTrust may offer useful lessons to support the teaching in this LifeFacts: Sexual Abuse Prevention curriculum. Trust is described as a valuable gift, one that is earned over time and not given freely. It is not assumed that people are either worthy of trust or not, but, rather, that worthiness cannot be determined too soon. Once given, the violation of trust is a very serious offense.

Teaching Questions

Look at these pictures again and tell me the safe behaviors and decisions you see in them. Trust takes time to grow. You have to expect it to take a while before you know and trust another person. It's very serious if a person you've given your trust to takes advantage of it. They are damaging a special feeling you have for them. It is wrong to hurt people who trust you. This happens if a relative or friend tries to trick or scare a person into allowing inappropriate touch. Safe dating behaviors allow time for trust to grow.

LifeFacts Assessment
