Accompanies Lesson: 8
Objectives
Students will:
- Demonstrate self-defense strategies to use when saying NO and/or leaving isn't enough to stay safe.
Teacher Notes
These lessons do not constitute training in self-defense. A local rape crisis center may be contacted to provide hands-on self-defense training. They merely present options for people who feel increasingly uneasy about their own personal safety. Students need to be reminded that they may or may not choose these options. Indeed, they may not even feel these self-defense strategies are necessary in a given situation. The most important self-protection actions are saying NO, leaving, and telling someone. Reinforce these.
Teaching Questions
This woman is using self-defense by yelling at someone who tried to grab her. She is yelling loudly to attract the attention of others. What might she be yelling? (Help! Rape! Fire!) Offenders don't want their victims to yell for help. He will probably run away. What else should she do besides yell? (run, tell someone what happened, describe the person)
LifeFacts Assessment
Ask: This woman yells for help when someone tries to grab her. Is this a good thing for her to do? What else can she do?
