Accompanies Lesson: 4
Objectives
Students will:
- Recognize symptoms of bleeding, bites and burns of varying levels of severity
- identify appropriate responses to these symptoms based on the severity of the symptoms
- identify basic strategies for dealing with minor symptoms of bleeding, bites and bums
Teacher Notes
Be sure students understand the importance of getting medical advice (i.e., calling their doctor) if they have questions or concerns about their symptoms. Refer to LifeFacts for Prevention Strategies. Be sure students do not become unnecessarily concerned about menstrual bleeding when teaching this lesson.
Teaching Questions
Andy was cut while he was cleaning up broken glass. His finger is bleeding and has a small piece of glass in it. Jill stepped on a nail and is bleeding from a ‘puncture” wound in her foot. Bob fell off his bike and has a bad cut on his leg.
Bleeding can be serious or minor If a wound has something embedded in it, like Andy’s finger, then he may need to see a doctor to have it removed. Puncture wounds, like Jill’s, need to be seen by a doctor. Bob’s cut may or may not require medical attention, depending on how it bleeds
What should a person who is bleeding from a minor cut do to take care of themselves? It is important to try to stop the bleeding of an injury. Extreme blood loss can cause unconsciousness passing out) or death. The two main ways to stop bleeding are:
Put pressure on the wound (cover with a clean cloth or bandage and press) elevate (raise) the bleeding cut to slow down the flow of blood to the wound.
Wash the wound well, using water and mild soap. If the bleeding stops after 3-5 minutes of direct pressure and elevation, then a “clot” or a “scab” has formed.
Cover the cut with a clean bandage every day (or when wet or dirty) Watch for signs of infection. If a cut doesn’t heal in a few days, becomes infected, or is very painful, call a doctor to ask for Advice.
Life Assessment
Ask: What has happened in each of these pictures? Each person is bleeding. What should each person do to take care of their bleeding?
