“Fear of Loss” - Accompanies Lesson: 7
Objectives
Students will:
- Understand the 4-Step CALM Plan for fear management when the fear is caused by the possibility of losing something.
Discussion
Ask: “Why can’t this man sleep?” This man can’t sleep because his new motorcycle is outside in the dark and he’s afraid it may get stolen. Before we talk about what moves he can make to feel better, what three things should he do first? (Put Teaching Picture 47 on the board as a prompt.) He should:
- Calm Ask: “Who can demonstrate calming techniques?”
- Ask: “What am I feeling?” “Why am I feeling that way?” Fear over losing his motorcycle.
- Look for ways to feel Ask: ‘’What could the man do to feel better?” He could:
- Say to himself, “It will probably be safe,” and go back to sleep
- Turn on the porch lights
- Move the motorcycle to the garage
- Buy an alarm
- Get insurance
He should “get safe by protecting“ what he’s afraid to lose. Whenever we feel fear because we may lose something get safe by protecting what we’re afraid to lose.
What is the last thing we do in the CALM process?
- Move to feel better
Ask: “What move or moves should he make to protect his motorcycle now and in the future?”
