Objectives

Students will:

  • Identify “Move to Feel Better” as the final step in the 4-Step CALM Plan for managing anger.
  • Understand the 4-Step CALM Plan for anger management when the anger is caused by frustration.

Discussion

Scott “moves” or does something to feel better. Ask: “What did Scott do?“ Scott would not give up his dream to see the concert. He started walking with his friend.

Remind students that the ‘M’ in CALM refers to “moving“ or taking action to feel better. The word “move” is used to stress the importance of making a decision to do something to feel better.

How one “moves” to feel better when angry will depend on the source of the anger. Ask: “Can anyone remember the three sources of anger?“

Write the three sources of anger on the board:

  1. Anger over loss of something valued.
  2. Anger over being treated unfairly, without respect, or being misunderstood
  3. Anger over being frustrated or prevented from reaching a goal.

Ask the class again to give you examples of each. Write the examples on the board.

Anger over being frustrated. Show Teaching Picture 32 with Teaching Picture 4. “Why was Scott angry?“ Or “What was the source of Scott's anger?“ Scott was angry because he was frustrated. What move did he make to feel better? He decided to “try another way.” He walked to the concert. Whenever something frustrates you or prevents you from doing what you want to, “try another way.”

Show Teaching Picture 28 again and practice applying the 4-Step CALM Plan to this girl's frustration. (See Teacher Guide for specifics.)
