Orange Wave Circle Story 2: "Too Close for Comfort”

Summary

Lily is minding her own business in the park. Arnold waves to her and then brings his chair closer to her and continues to do so until he encroaches upon her personal space. Then Arnold hugs Lily. She laughs and tells him to stop and Arnold does. He moves further away.

      I was relaxing in the park one day...

      When Arnold came and sat down in another chair.

      Arnold and I waved "hi" to each other, because we were far apart.

      Then Arnold moved his chair closer..

      And all of a sudden he tried to hug me. I told him "Stop*! I didn't want that kind of a relationship

      Arnold wanted to change our circle relationship and I did not.

      Arnold remembered that touching needs to feel comfortable to both of us at the same time.

      I do not need to tell my safe person. Arnold did not try to touch my private parts. Arnold stopped right away when I asked him to. He's never done this before and he wont do it again.

  1. Replay the story without sound. Guide the students to recreate the story in their own words. During this discussion be sure to point out that:
    • Arnold and Lily know each other's names, but are too far away to shake hands so they wave.
    • Lily wants to keep their acquaintance relationship and Arnold wants romance.
    • Arnold stops when Lily asks him to.
    • He remembers mutuality.
    • Lily does not tell her safe person. No private parts are involved and Arnold has never done this before and says he never will again.
