Applying The Circle Concept to Abuse Prevention

Abuse takes many forms. It can be sexual, physical, and/or verbal. The common denominator of all abuse is that it denies mutuality.

Again and again, abuse is defined in concrete terms, using the circle concept to express non-mutuality: one person changing the established circle relationship without the consent of the other. Abuse occurs when there is a change in a relationship by force. by threat, by trickery, and/or with secrecy.

Because of the learning characteristics of persons with mental retardation, they are particularly vulnerable to trickery and threats, both real and imagined. They have a limited ability to predict the consequences of behavior and have difficulty distinguishing myth from reality.

The Circle concept provides a framework for establishing relationships and enhancing the quality of those relationships. CIRCLES: STOP ABUSE concentrates on teaching persons with developmental disabilities to recognize and consequently avoid sexually threatening or abusive situations.
