Lesson 8: Breast Development

Objectives:

Students will:

  • Recognize and accept normal variations in breast development including size, shape, and coloration of breasts and nipples.
  • Understand that bras are worn for comfort, support and to keep breasts private.
  • Become aware of how to buy bras that are right for them.

Vocabulary: breasts, nipples, bras

Materials: Picture Cards 10, 11, and 12, bras, underwear section of a clothing catalog

Procedure:

  1. Read Picture Cards 10, 11, and 12 and go over discussion questions.
  2. Teachers can show pictures of or bring in examples of bras that hook in the front and in the back. It's helpful for some students with poor motor skills to be shown bras that clasp in the front. The alternative is to show them that other bras can be clasped in front and then turned around.
  3. A girl can be very uncomfortable about asking her mother if she can buy a bra. Discuss their feelings about this. Have students tell how they will ask their mothers. (Suggestions - "Mom can I wear a bra? I think I need one." or "Would it be OK if I started wearing a bra?" or "Mom, do you think I need a bra?")
  4. Additional information. For students who are interested and able to understand, the teacher can discuss the two measurements used to fit a bra, i.e. cup size by letter and measurement around the chest in inches.
