Objectives:
Students will:
- Use correct terminology to identify the breasts, vulva, and buttocks as the 3 private body parts of girls and women.
Vocabulary: private, public, vulva, breasts, buttocks
Materials: Picture Card 9, magazines, scissors, paper, 2 boxes, sample of girls' and women's clothing, 2 signs - "public" and "private"
Procedure:
- Read Picture Card 9 and go over discussion questions.
- Have students look through magazines and tear out pictures of various locations indoors and outdoors. Then have students identify these locations as public or private. Pictures can be sorted into 2 separate boxes and then glued on 2 large pieces of poster board marked "public" and "private". Save these for Procedure #4. For purposes of this class students should only identify the bedroom and the bathroom as private locations. All other locations are public. (NOTE: If students are able to understand more abstract concepts, they can also be told that other locations are considered private if the person is alone or with one other person and others cannot see them or hear them. Ex. A living room can be a private place to talk to a parent about something private, if no one else is around.)
- Bring a stack of women's clothing to school. Label 2 boxes with signs that say "public" and "private". Have students sort clothing accordingly. (Bras, undershirts, underpants, slips, camisoles, and pajamas are private.)
- Hang up the 2 signs made in Procedure #2 on opposite sides of the room. Tell students that you are going to name some activities. If the activity is private, go stand by the sign that says private. If the activity can be done in public, go stand by the sign that says public. (Modification - Students can point to the sign.)
- getting dressed
- riding the bus
- putting on deodorant
- changing clothes
- using the bathroom
- shaving
- adjusting undershirt or bra strap
- doing homework
- fixing a slip

- playing soccer
- exercising
- talking about using the bathroom
- Procedure 4 can be repeated using body parts in order to reinforce learning that the vulva, buttocks, and breasts are the private parts of a girl's body.
Teacher Note: To clarify the issue of privacy, it is extremely important that a student with a physical disability be aided in toileting, dressing and hygiene in a private setting in a respectful and dignified fashion.
