Objectives:
Students will:
- Become aware of the fact that the growth of the voice box during puberty makes the voice get deeper.
Vocabulary: voice box, Adam's apple
Materials: Picture Card 4
Procedure:
- Read Picture Card 4 and go over discussion questions.
- Have students feel the vibrations in the vocal chords when they talk. Play a game where students have to guess who is speaking. Have all students close their eyes. While they have their eyes closed choose one student to say "Hi! How are you doing?" Have the other students guess who said it. Do this several times. Then discuss the fact that it's the size and shape of the voice box that gives each individual the specific sound to his voice. And when the voice box grows it will have a new distinctive sound that others will be able to recognize, because although each boy's voice gets deeper it will still be different than the others.
- Additional information. If students are interested it can be helpful to explain that the voice change can take place quickly or rather slowly. Also, some boys move right into their new deep voice and other boys find that their voices crack a lot during the change.
