Lesson 3: Muscle Growth

Objectives:

Students will:

• Recognize that arm and leg muscles grow and develop during puberty.

Vocabulary: muscles

Materials: Picture Card 3, anatomical model or medical illustration which shows the muscles of the human body

Procedure:

1. Read Picture Card 3 and go over discussion questions.
2. If possible, get a plastic anatomical model or a medical illustration of the muscles of the human body and show students that muscles are an important part of the whole body. Tell them that it is important to exercise all muscles not just muscles of the upper body.

Teacher Note: It is important to be sensitive about boys with physical disabilities. Physical strength is often associated with masculinity in our culture. It's important to acknowledge any feelings they may have about their bodies. Teachers need to help boys realize that their true value and masculinity is judged by who they are and how they act rather than by the size of their muscles.
