Materials: Picture Card 34 and 35, worksheet #8
Procedure:
- Read Picture Card 34 and go over discussion questions.
- Invite a doctor or a nurse as a guest speaker. Guest speaker can review normal medical procedures in a reassuring tone and answer students' questions.
- Read Picture Card 35 and go over discussion questions.
- Have each student fill in the medical card on worksheet #8 with doctor's name and phone number on it to keep in her purse or backpack. Be sure to talk about the appropriate times to use this kind of emergency information.
- Game - "To Report or No Need to Report". Teacher reads each of the following statements. Students must decide whether a girl needs to tell someone if she has any of the following problems. This can be played on teams or as individuals with a student receiving one point for each question answered correctly. (Y= yes report, N = No need to report)
- A girl has the hiccups. (N)
- A girl sees blood when she goes to the bathroom and she does not have her period. (Y)
- A girl has a pimple. (N)
- A girl's vulva area itches a lot. (Y)
- A girl feels burning when she urinates (pees). (Y)
- A girl has strong body odor. (N)

Teacher Note: Students who use an augmentative communication device will benefit from having a special board or set of words that can be used to talk about private issues including reporting any of these medical problems.
