Lesson 19: Choosing to Look Your Best

Objectives:

Students will:

  • Describe the choices a girl can make in order to show others that she cares about how she looks.

Vocabulary: No new words introduced

Materials: Picture Card 33 or 40, mirrors, hygiene products from home, shoe boxes

Procedure:

  1. Read Picture Card 33 and go over discussion questions. Picture Card 40 can be used with, or in place of, this one.
  2. Have the class brainstorm to make a list of hygiene products used each day. (soap, washcloth, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, brush, comb, fingernail brush, nail clipper, etc.) Ask what other hygiene products girls use once they have gone through the changes of puberty. (pads, tampons, deodorant, razor)
  3. Explain that it is helpful to use a mirror to check on hygiene. A girl should use a full-length mirror as well as a facial-size mirror to decide how she looks. Using the list developed in procedure #2, have students bring in a shoe box of hygiene products from home. Have students use these materials, as well as a mirror, to develop a neat appearance at school. Allow students to help one another. This can be a good time to help students with individual hygiene problems. Encourage students with physical disabilities to identify what they need help with and what choices they would like to make regarding their hairstyles, etc.
⚠️
Note: Help students develop a sensitivity to the fact that some people cannot afford new clothes but all teens can work toward a clean, neat appearance.
