Objectives:
Students will:
- Describe the choices a boy can make in order to show others that he cares about how he looks.
Vocabulary: No new words introduced.
Materials: Picture Card 26 or 33, mirrors, hygiene products from home, shoe boxes
Procedure:
- Read Picture Card 26 and go over discussion questions. Picture Card 33 can be used with, or in place of, this one.
- Have the class brainstorm to make a list of hygiene products used each day. (soap, washcloth, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, brush, comb, fingernail brush, nail clipper etc.) Ask what other hygiene products boys use once they have gone through the changes of puberty. (deodorant, razor)
- Explain that it is helpful to use a mirror to check on hygiene. A boy should use a full-length mirror as well as a facial-size mirror to decide how he looks. Using the list developed in procedure #2, have students bring in a shoe box of hygiene products from home. Have students use these materials, as well as a mirror, to develop a neat appearance at school. Allow students to help one another. This can be a good time to help students with individual hygiene problems such as a dirty neck. Encourage students with physical disabilities to identify what they need help with and what choices they would like to make regarding their hairstyles etc., Note: Help students develop a sensitivity to the fact that some people cannot afford new clothes but all teens can work toward a clean, neat appearance.
