stomach

kidneys

Materials: Picture Cards 14, 15, and 16, large white T-shirt, worksheet #3 - drinking system (A) and eating system (B), overhead projector, doll

Procedure:

  1. Read Picture Cards 14, 15, and 16 and go over discussion questions.
  2. Seeing What's Inside. Have worksheet #3 (A) and (B) made into 2 transparencies. Explain to students that in order for them to really understand where their eating and drinking systems are located, you are going to do an activity that may remind them of an x-ray. Ex- plain that a picture will be projected to show them exactly where each system is inside of them. Since we can't really see what's inside, this is a fun way to imagine.
  3. Ask for a student to volunteer to put on a large white T-shirt over her clothes. Then ask her to stand in front of the overhead projector.

Using worksheet #3 - transparency (A), project the picture of the drinking system onto the girl's T-shirt. Projector may need to be moved to adjust the size. Proportion should be similar to Picture Card 15. Review the information on the picture card. When you drink something where does it go? Review mouth, food pipe, stomach, kidneys, bladder and urethra. Students generally enjoy this activity and each student will probably want to have a turn.

  4. Repeat this activity with worksheet #3 - transparency (B), the eating system transparency. Review the terms mouth, food pipe, stomach, intestines and anus.
  5. Reverse Roles. Allow students to take turns being the teacher. Have each student choose Picture Card 14, 15 or 16 to "teach" to the class.
  6. Hygiene Girls need to be reminded about the importance of wiping from front to back after urinating or doing a BM. Explain that there are germs in the BM and around the anus that can go in the urethra and vagina and cause an infection if they wipe back to front. It may be helpful to demonstrate this front-to-back motion using a doll.
