- Things work out pretty well when people keep their cool. The next time somebody criticizes you, think about what they're saying. Maybe they have a point that is valid.
- Fair criticism from someone else can sometimes actually help you to become a better person. BeCool and recognize when criticism is fair.
- Criticism refers to critical statements about a person's actions, appearance, or characteristics made by others sometimes in order to have a positive effect, such as a positive change in behavior or an improvement in the relationship.
- Criticism is a problem that can be handled effectively--you have a choice of how to respond.
- COLD and HOT responses usually make the situation worse.
- BeCool has three steps:
- Looking cool
- Thinking cool
- Acting cool
- LOOKING COOL includes taking deep breaths. THINKING COOL includes reminding yourself "You are okay." Two ways of ACTING COOL are "Accepting" and "Apologizing."
- "Accepting" and "Apologizing" are empowering responses. Apologies usually start with "I'm sorry." They can include a statement that:
- Owns up to what you have or haven't done ("I guess I haven't been very considerate.")
- Reveals the perspective you were coming from ("No one minded me doing that at home.")
- Expresses appreciation for the person telling you ("I appreciate your honesty.")
- What you want ("I really want it to work here.")
- It takes courage to give valid criticism.
- It takes courage to receive criticism, to "Accept" and "Apologize."
- Some people have habits of criticizing and negating. Those people usually do not give valid criticisms, but are more likely to see themselves as victims and are always complaining.
