Lesson 2: Review

  • Teasing is a problem that can be handled effectively. You have a choice of how to respond.
  • LOOKING COOL includes taking deep breaths (having an interested but detached nonthreatening demeanor.)
  • THINKING COOL includes reminding yourself that you are okay and you can handle the situation (using "non-blaming perceiving style" statements.)
  • Four ways of ACTING COOL are:
    • Ignoring
    • Laughing It Off
    • Changing The Subject
    • Asking To Stop
  • "Ask The Teaser To Stop" using the 4-Step Assertion Plan:
  • Step 1: Tell what behavior you don't like.

Step 2: Tell how the behavior makes you feel.

Step 3: Tell what behavior you want instead.

Step 4: If you don't get to an agreement, tell what will happen if you can't work things out.

  • When people laugh at you or tease you, it is not your fault. Do not take it personally. They are at fault if it is unkind or hurtful. You are okay. Learn to let the teasing and laughter drift away as a cloud in the wind, or let it wash right off you like water off a duck's back.
  • There are some people who let their lives be miserable because someone else teases them. You have a choice of how you will handle the teasing. You do not have to feel bad about yourself just because someone teases you. Hurtful teasing is cruel and insensitive. Do not be a victim to their behavior. You can try to do something about your situation.
