- Criticism refers to critical statements about a person's actions, appearance or characteristics made by others sometimes in order to have a positive effect, such as a positive change in behavior or an improvement in the relationship.
- Things work out pretty well when people keep their cool. The next time somebody criticizes you, think about what they're saying. Maybe they have a point that is valid.
- Criticism is a problem that can be handled effectively have a choice of how to respond.
- COLD and HOT responses usually make the situation worse.
- BeCool has three steps:
- Looking cool
- Thinking cool
- Acting cool
- LOOKING COOL behavior involves a detached nonthreatening demeanor-includes taking deep breaths, relaxing muscles, and assuming a nonaggressive, attentive facial expression.
- THINKING COOL is a non-blaming perceiving style. It includes reminding yourself "You are okay," "Everyone makes mistakes," etc.
- ACTING COOL is behavior that asserts rights with respect and fairness.
- Two ways of ACTING COOL are "asking for clarification" if you are unclear about the criticism and "accepting it" once you've figured out that the criticism is fair.
- Criticism, handled in a cool, assertive manner, can enable you to learn from your mistakes.
- COOL responses usually make the situation better.
