Lesson 1: Series Objectives

Students will:

  1. Understand that how we think about a problem, our self-talk, influences our feelings and behavior.
  2. Understand why negative self-talk is "irrational" and promotes Losing It!
  3. Understand how The BeCool (Rational) Self-Talk Process™ promotes rational thinking, self-control and self-benefiting behavior.
  4. Recognize and identify the three major elements of negative (irrational) self-talk.
  5. Understand the advantages of imagining the worst-case consequences before deciding to Lose It!
  6. Recognize and identify the four major elements of The BeCool (Rational) Self-Talk Process.
  7. Understand how to use The BeCool Problem Scale™ to keep problems in proper perspective.
  8. Understand why name-calling, swearing, hateful and other "fighting" words are examples of self-talk that intensify the problem and should be avoided.
  9. Understand that they rather than other people and events control their feelings and the buttons that push them.
  10. Understand the advantages of taking responsibility for fixing the problem over blaming or getting even
  11. Define the statement "Don't turn a problem you can handle into one you can't."
