▶️ Video 1: “The Mother of all Mothers” Emotional Blackmail vs. Give & Take”
Module Introduction
Infants negotiate for what they want from authority figures by either crying or throwing a tantrum. Unfortunately, by adolescence, many children still are using the same techniques. In this Module, your students will learn a more effective way to work out agreements and settle differences with people in authority. They'll learn the importance of establishing an "atmosphere" of respect and how to negotiate a mutually beneficial agreement - the only kind of agreement most authority figures will consider.
Your students also will learn why using threats and emotional blackmail never should be used with someone whose cooperation they may need in the future. i.e.. most of the authority figures in their lives.
In Video 1, the positive consequences of a "COOL" Give & Take Negotiation approach to settle differences with authority figures are contrasted against the negative outcomes of the threatening "HOT" and self-defeating "COLD" styles. Your students will learn basic negotiation techniques and the four components of a WISE. Agreement. This video also is especially useful in demonstrating what emotional blackmail looks like.
Video 2 continues to illustrate the importance of assuming an attitude of "respect" when negotiating with authority and the typical ineffectiveness of using demands and threats. The elements of a W.LS.E. Agreement have been illustrated again as the preferred method of settling differences with authority.
