Objectives:
Students will:
- Know that during puberty hair on boys' arms and legs gets longer and thicker and new hair begins to grow in the underarm area and sometimes on the chest, back, or shoulders.
- Review the 2 ways teens and men can shave.
- Realize that facial hair growth is usually one of the last changes of puberty.
- Realize that choosing to grow a beard or mustache is a choice that men can make.
Vocabulary: shaving, beard, electric razor, mustache, shaving cream, razor
Materials: Picture Cards 5, 6, and 7 electric razors, shaving cream and razor
Procedure:
- Read Picture Cards 5, 6, and 7 and go over discussion questions.
- Allow students to see an electric razor and a regular razor. If appropriate, demonstrate careful use of an electric razor. Remind students that, as with any electrical appliance, one never gets an electric razor wet.
Teacher Note: The wide variations in the amount and thickness of facial hair growth in males is often determined by racial or genetic background. Some groups such as Native American Indians and some Asians have such fine hair growth on their faces that they do no need to shave.
