Materials: Picture Cards 13 and 14, large white T-shirt, worksheet #3 - transparencies of drinking system (A) and eating system (B), overhead projector

Procedure:

  1. Read Picture Cards 13 and 14 and go over discussion questions.
  2. Seeing What's Inside. Have worksheets #3 (A) and (B) made into transparencies. Explain to students that in order for them to really understand where their eating and drinking systems are located, you are going to do an activity that may remind them of an x-ray. Ex- plain that a picture will be projected to show them exactly where each system is inside of them. Since we can't really see what's inside, this is a fun way to imagine.
  3. Ask for a student to volunteer to put on a large white T-shirt over his clothes. Then ask him to stand in front of the overhead projector. Using worksheet #3 - transparency (A) project the picture of the drinking system onto the boy's T-shirt. Projector may need to be moved to adjust the size. Proportion should be similar to Picture Card 13. Review the information on the picture card. When you drink something where does it go? Review mouth, food pipe, stomach, kidneys, bladder and penis. Students generally enjoy this activity and each student will probably want to have a turn.

  4. Repeat this activity with worksheet #3 - transparency (B), the eating system. Review the terms mouth, food pipe, stomach, intestines and anus.
  5. Reverse Roles. Allow students to take turns being the teacher. Have each student choose Picture Card 13 or 14 to "teach" to the class.
